Have you ever seen the Winnetou series?  There were German settlers in the old west who befriended the Indians.

Gib to Padre!

The car, you can keep the rest of the content of that horrible ad. Well, I’ll take the Luger that kid seems to be holding too.

What are Native Americans? Sounds like Commie talk. Little Jimmy there is obviously dressed up as a savage Injun.

Yeah... back in the ‘50s, political correctness wasn’t really a thing... I think most of them weren’t trying to be offensive, they just weren’t aware that this was a problem. De S oto at this time gave a lot of their adds a western theme because westerns were really popular at the time, so they probably just thought an Indian theme would be fun for a station wagon advertisement.

It’s hard to backseat drive when the back seat is backwards...

Indians, Germans, In 1950's America they’re all the same, right?

It’s probably because realistic-looking toy guns were becoming popular at the time and De Soto was just like, “Give the kid a gun, any gun will do”.

This was also only a couple years removed from the same corporate advertisers releasing this:

Kinja'd!!!

In the 40’s and 50’s Desoto actually had a pretty decent group of celebrity endorsers as well. I know they had ads featuring Walt Disney, Groucho Marx, and Spencer Tracy. I believe they sponsored a few radio shows that later became early tv shows as well, but I don’t recall exactly which they were.

I’ve always wondered about those. I’ve heard that humans can survive much higher g’s when facing backwards, so there could maybe be a small safety advantage for children that way. But I also wonder what it would be like for people who tend to get carsick... If you’re facing backwards and can’t see where you’re going, does that make the carsickness worse? O r is it fine because you can see the road moving behind the car?

I didn’t know there were Disney car ads in the ‘40s! As a huge Disney fan, seeing him next to that car works on me. I want that De Soto now.

When I was little, I tended toward car sickness. I loved to read but couldn’t do it on  road trips. The brain has trouble with input saying you’re moving while your eyes say you’re still. So being able to see outside is what’s important, not so much your orientation. That said, you get tired sitting in that seat for too many miles. We used to put down the seats and spread out sleeping bags sometimes.  I don’t know how many Gs that’s rated for. Fortunately we never had to find out.

I was trying to see if I could find any celebrity endorsements for my favorite Desoto, the airflow. Unfortunately, I didn’t find anything for that, but I did learn that the list of big names they used was much larger than I realized.
